Alpharetta began in the 1830´s when the Cherokee Nation made its resettlement. Brought in by the enticement of free Indian lands, a small group of nomadic settlers came into the area. Not long afterward, permanent farmers and various merchants became the prosperous winners of land lotteries and the "First City", Alpharetta was established.

On the 11th of December 1858, Alpharetta was legally chartered. Prior to that time, it had been known as the "Town of Milton". Both a courthouse and a jail were soon-after constructed. The Courthouse building served as a landmark, as the city limits were to extend in a 1/2 mile radius from the Courthouse. By the Civil War, Alpharetta had expanded into a fair-sized town which offered a few hotels, numerous mercantile shops, a handful of churches and a small school. The farms in and around the area were mostly smaller family farms, the majority of which were not slave owners.

Many of its earlier records are insufficient because as the Union Army´s left flank came through the area, the original Courthouse was set on fire. To be honest, it was never proven whether or not it was burned by the Union Troops or rather by the vast amounts of retreating Confederate soldiers. Amazingly Dr. O. P. Skeleton was able to get into the flaming courthouse and salvage many court documents, to which he placed into hiding and promptly billed the City of Alpharetta $30.00 for "services rendered". A little later, the City ended up paying $60 for the doctor´s friend, John Webb, to return them.

Although steady, growth within Milton County was less than magnificent. In the following decades, they were hampered by the lack of a railroad. During the devastating crush on the nation´s economy, the great depression in the 1930´s caused Milton County to hover near bankruptcy. Saving itself from disaster, it was decided that it would be an advantage to everyone involved if there were a merger between Milton County and Fulton County. In 1932, what once was the county seat of Milton County, Alpharetta quickly transformed into a popular smaller city in the newly formed Fulton County.

Alpharetta has almost 200 restaurants of almost every cuisine imaginable. Boasting of live music, a skating complex, movie theaters, beautiful parks, play grounds and several sporting facilities, this natural paradise offers more than six miles of pathways, paved through our beautiful wooded wetlands. With it´s down south country atmosphere and expanse spaces of green, Alpharetta has become one of the most rapidly growing quintessential settings to start a business, raise a family, or make a home.
